9pm: Qadasi and Maqhinga
Hailing from Empangeni in the heart of Zululand, David ‘Qadasi’ Jenkins and Maqhinga Radebe are a South African Music Award winning duo on a quest to revive the powerful sounds of traditional Maskandi music. Both professional musicians in their own right, over the last ten years the duo have taken their fusion of traditional Zulu and western folk music to audiences in the UK, Europe, Asia and throughout South Africa.
8pm: Jahworx
From the misty mountains of Magoebaskloof in Limpopo, Jahworx is coming your way with a fresh sound of acoustic and percussion based reggae fused with world genres. Taking well known covers to next level creativeness and originals that will blow your socks off. On guitar and vocals we have Juanne Steenkamp with his carpenter fingers and voice with more dynamic than your average Danville Datsun. On bass we have Derius Erasmus with an ear just as good as his photographer’s eye, and on percussion we have Alicia Boshoff with her rhythmic, leather working hands.
7pm: Koos Du Plessis Tribute – Charles Webster
Tragically killed in a motorcar accident close to Krugersdorp during the early morning hours of 15 January 1984, Koos du Plessis is one of Afrikaans music’s best-loved poets and troubadours. He never made it to forty, and so we’ll never know what might have been, but some would consider him an Afrikaans Leornard Cohen or Bob Dylan. In this set Charles Webster, better known for English solo covers and his work with Tanya Nicolson as part of Blackbird, lives out the Afrikaner half of his background and pays tribute to a great who died far too young.
