9pm – • Mali Zulu •
MALIZULU is a pop/folk duo from Pietermaritzburg. We have been together for three years as an independent band and close friends. We pride ourselves with our talents as we are all self taught. This makes room for a lot of creativity. We have original songs and we do covers (With a MALIZULU twist) as well. This has caught a lot of attention and has made the brand grow much quicker.
8pm – Scrapyard Junkies (featuring Summer du Preez)
Scrapyard Junkies consists of a bunch of unmentionables who started jamming together at the notorious Thistle Hotel (aka Boshoff St Country Club). Junkies live sets usually include original indy tunes, covers from mid 20th century jazz standards through post-punk and grunge to contemporary indie-rock, and improvised jams to keep everyone on edge. The Junkies also, and uniquely, have a specialist tambourine player formerly known as ‘the swish’.
7:30 – W.I.S.H.
W.I.S.H. is an initiative set up by well-known Durban performer Shelley McLean – it is a vocal class offered to all women who have a ‘song in their hearts.’ Shelley identified a gap in the music world, for the many people who loved singing at school or at university, but now find themselves without an outlet for sharing their singing passion. After receiving several requests for private singing lessons, McLean decided to head up a group vocal class, one that would enable singers to learn more about the technical aspects of singing as well as explore the delights of singing in harmony, while increasing their repertoire. This Durban group has steadily grown over the past 7 years and the Hilton W.I.S.H group, which has been running for just short of a year, has been rehearsing hard for the upcoming debut performance at MiTH. Joining them on stage are five of Shelley’s music students as well as ex Drakie, Hayden Everill, who was McLean’s teaching colleague. An honest offering of musical joy.
