MiTH (Music in The Hills) this week 25/10/2017 – John Ellis, Emily Winter, The Reid Family Band & 2G.
Time: 7pm, entry R30, bring your own booze. Food and soft drinks are available for sale.
7pm – EMILY WINTER
Emily is a young musician visiting from the UK, where she has grown as a charming singer and instrumentalist for local events in her home town. She plays a collection of classic and independent folk, with a repertoire of covers spanning many decades. Influences include Lianne La Havas, Joni Mitchell, Laura Marling and Simon and Garfunkel. She is sure to bring a unique and dynamic atmosphere to the MITH stage.
7.30pm – THE REID FAMILY
The Reid Family Band has been years in the making, jamming together for many years. Vince had an interest in music from young age and is mainly self-taught. He plays keyboards, guitar and recently, tin whistle. Rhiannon, who is 16 and with the help of Kech Sanchez, she has honed her skills on guitar and sings lead vocals. Aidan who is 11 years old, showed musical abilities from a very young age, also sings. Tess organises the bookings and joins in on vocals and percussion, when possible. The Reid Family Band enjoys many different genres of music but are particularly influenced by Irish, Folk and Pop music.
8.15pm – 2G (RON GEEVERS AND JOHN GOODALL)
John leads 2G on acoustic guitar and vocals, while Ron contributes harmonies (thanks to Fisherman’s Friends), and as the ‘concussionist’. John Goodall started playing music back at school and varsity, and played with the Hillbilly band with Teabox Base bands. He grew into the blues and has joined forces with Ron Geevers on percussion. John has since added banjo and mouth organ to his musical skills, and the combined sound is pleasing and unusual. “2G” simply refers to the first letter of our surnames.
9pm – JOHN ELLIS
John Ellis is a singer-songwriter from Durban, South Africa. The principal member, guitar-player, vocalist and songwriter for the internationally renowned and award-winning band Tree63, he relocated back to his hometown from America after many years of international success to pursue a solo career. In 2010 he released his debut solo album, the politically-charged “Come Out Fighting”, which garnered him another SAMA nomination, and in 2011, in addition to his production work for other South African artists, he recorded his follow-up, an acoustic album entitled “Rural”, accompanied by Johnny Clegg drummer and percussionist extraordinaire Barry van Zyl. Following a deal with Sony in 2012, John recently released “Bush Telegraph”, a 5-track digital EP. John is an accomplished guitarist, having featured on numerous American and British recordings, as well as on albums by South African artists such as Ernie Smith, Farryl Purkiss and Ard Matthews. John also lectures English literature, politics, communication, English as a second language and academic literacy.
