8:45pm: Ilan Lax and Friends
Ilan Lax has spent a lifetime singing – in one way or another. This show brings a cross section of Ilan’s original songs that reflect a variety of themes and styles from folk, blues, jazz, rock, classical and world music. These songs are drawn from a life lived as an engaged and active citizen, partner, and parent – reflecting on his diverse array of relationships and experience of the world.
Ilan has stayed involved in the Pietermaritzburg live music scene since the early eighties. For this show he welcomes on stage a group of gifted friends: Chris Smith (a maestro on guitars), Roly Struckmeyer (a virtuoso on bass) and Brian Bedingfield (an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and singer).
Ilan invites you to share these evocative, warm and significant snippets from his life’s journey, so ably complimented and embellished by the outstanding skills and musicianship of his experienced and talented friends.
7:40pm: Blackbird and the Groove
Tanya Nicolson and Charles Webster are well known in the Midlands for their work as Blackbird, a vocal-acoustic duo that adapts songs into flowing jazzy or indie styles with tasteful guitar and lilting harmonies. More recently, they have collaborated with drummer (and excellent backing vocalist) Rudi Engelbrecht on the “Twist and Shout” Beatles tribute show. This MiTH set will flow from Classic Blackbird and morph into a Twist and Shout Teaser, as Rudi joins Blackbird on stage to promote upcoming Beatles shows at Waterski Farm in Tala Valley on the 6th of October, and at The Knoll on the 23rd of November. 7pm: Rosie Whitfield
Out of the KZN Midlands, novice performer, singer, pianist and songwriter Rosie Whitfield started singing at a young age. She performed her first composition at the age of 12 and was instantly hooked on music. She identifies as a contemporary folk artist whose works have been influenced by artists such as Nora Jones and Celtic Women. Some of her greatest joys have been singing in the Midlands Youth Choir, where she sang on tour in Westminster Abbey for the late Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, as well as making the top ten finalists of PMB’s Got Talent.
